Today was the “Apple day” and surely the new product introduced by Steve Jobs today which impressed me most and that will make me open my pocket (as usual) is the new iPod Touch.
The new iPod Touch is basically an iPhone without the phone capabilities (and more…). In comparison to the other iPods, a big step ahead in terms of UI, even if without the high capacity of the “classic” iPods (now up to 160GB!!!)
After looking at the new iPod Touch, the first device which came up to my mind is my Nokia N800. What is best to do what? It is surely the most similar device to the new iPod, but we can find many differences that, in my opinion, make the new iPod Touch the winner if you want a “media player” while the Nokia N800 is much better in terms of communication capabilities.

As you can see, the iPod Touch is a little bit smaller and much thinner and lighter. No communication tools are available (neither microphone or speaker are available) but it supports H.264, not supported by the N800.
The resolution of the N800 is much higher, but according to what I saw from the new iPod photos, the iPod seems much better in terms of UI (hey, that’s Apple!).
I noticed that even if you can surf the web, no email client is available on the iPhone touch. If you use Gmail or other web mail services, no problem, but I would have included the iPhone ‘s email client. Why not? On the other hand, the email client of the N800 is not that great, even if you may want to install 3rd party mail clients.
In addition, no bluetooth is available on the new iPod. They don’t want to risk that people might exchange songs with it?
All that said, this first quick comparison leads me to the following conclusion: the new iPod Touch seems fantastic, a must-have if you want a the last generation multimedia device also capable of web surfing, email (web) and calendar functionalities.
On the other hand, when it comes to communicate, the N800 is far better (Skype, Gizmo, video calls and so on…). And, we can’t forget that I can install 3rd party apps on the N800, a feature not available (yet?) on the iPod Touch.
My choice? Both
apple, ipod touch, luca filigheddu, n800, nokia
