I’ve been involved in VOIP since 1999, I wrote the first VOIP C++ code in 2000 and I then observed the market until now, as CTO (first) and CEO (after) of my company that has always been focused in VOIP-related products and services.

That said, during this period I saw many players becoming winners and others losers, as well as different business models that were losers years ago that now are candidate (maybe) to be successful. The market is evolving, users are evolving and Telecom Operators are always there with their “wires” into customers’ premises.

What should we expect from VOIP in 2008? Here is my 2 cents, and the following list is certainly a “quick and dirty” one since each of the following points deserves an entire blog post, that will follow soon.

VoIP for 2008 is:

  1. Solving a problem
  2. Helping businesses to make/save money
  3. Integration
  4. Web-based
  5. Social (that doesn’t necessarily mean Facebook…)
  6. Only geeks must know it is VoIP
  7. I give you something, you pay me
  8. Mobile IM/VOIP
  9. Some services will be shut down
  10. It’s time to condiverge

In the meantime, I want to quote my online friend Ken Camp, that well summarizes 1) 2) and 3):

Integrating services, voice – video – data, with business applications like Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Supply Chain Management and Human Resources Management are going to be the really hot focal points in 2008. That’s where the real need is. And to succeed – to thrive – solution providers can’t offer widgets and plumbing and still win business.

Dear "nobody", no worries, but the weigh of the opinion coming from someone that doesn't have the courage to disclose his name, email and website to me is less than 0. Thanks

Not to put too fine a point on it, but if you GIVE me something why should I pay you? If you are SELLING something and I choose to buy it, that's another matter. But to leave that point just hang there without further explanation or clarification just seems wrong.
