Nokia iPhone killer almost ready?

Nokia confirms that there is an iPhone killer almost ready in their pipeline. It will be the first Nokia touchscreen device and it’s evident its purpose is to attack the dominance of the iPhone in that market segment.

Unlike iPhone, the new handset, codename “Tube”, will provide customers with all the features they are used to find in Nokia phones, in particular their powerful “sharing” capabilities, something partially missed on the iPhone (as I experienced directly yesterday). In addition, Tube will support Java natively, something absent from the iPhone.

The biggest issue that I see with Nokia is the lack of distribution in the US. Finding a N-series Nokia phone is much difficult in US since mobile operators are not bundling it with their plans (even if it seems they will pretty soon). Unless they sign a distribution deal with a local operator like Apple did, competing with the iPhone in the US market is going to be really tough.

I really look forward to it and I’m convinced consumers we’ll surely be happy with that, being Nokia, don’t forget it, a leader in this market. The point is: are we speaking of mobile phones (where Nokia is leader) or internet devices closer to computers than to phones? Because, in that case, Apple is leader…
