$6.5 Million in Cash ?

by Luca Filigheddu on June 4, 2008

Yesterday I received a press release from i2Telecom, stating that they sold a certain patent along with some applications to Sinon Data LLC for $6.5 Million in cash

According to the press release, it should be one of the patents behind their VoiceStick service, a VOIP service for the consumer market based on a special USB Memory Sitck which turns any PC into a phone device.

The VoiceStick™, itself, is a patent-pending proprietary device of i2Telecom. It is a USB Memory Stick that not only turns any computer anywhere in the world into your phone, it also allows you to store massive amounts of personal data, music, pictures, presentations, etc.

My question is: how can a company buying a patent like that find a valid business model to get a fair return of investment in a relatively short period of time? I don’t know anything about Sinon Data (and I can’t find anything on Google), but I presume there is a valid reason for buying a patent like that. I’m really curious to see what this reason is.

Any thought? Please leave a comment.

Yes, Magic Jack is the other service, in my knowledge, that uses the same approach. A possible way to see this deal is that Sinon Data wants to hire a bunch of big lawyers to sue some VoIP players.

Well lets see, Why would I buy the rights to this ? Lets look at this page. The Magic Jack ,a similar product to the voicestick. Do they have a patent? Does Vonage have a Patent.????? I smel a law Suite.
