If you deal with thousand emails every week (or even day) this tip is for you.

The best way to filter unread messages in  Gmail is to search for:

“in:unread”

The point is that this string lets you filter ALL your unread emails, even those in your trash or other folders. If you just want to see unread messages labeled as “inbox”, you have to use the following string:

“in:unread and label:inbox”

That being said, the problem comes when you want to save this search, since Gmail doesn’t allow to save search strings, natively at least. The trick is to enable the “Quick Links” Gmail Lab feature. With that option enabled, you’ll be able to save that search and access it again from your Gmail’s sidebar.
