Since I got a Blackberry Bold and experienced what push-email means in terms of increased productivity, I can definitely say this is a feature I’d have liked on any mobile phone I owned. A few months ago I reviewed a viable solution for Nokia phones, but now I’d like to point out a solution which works very well on almost any mobile phone.
Funambol, this is the name of the solution, is an innovative cross-platform messaging/PIM and mobile backup suite which lets you bring a blackberry-like service on any mobile phone. It currently supports Blackberry itself, iPhone, Windows Mobile, JavaME, Symbian and Pocket PC. The number of supported mobile phones is impressive, almost 2 billions!.
The solution has been developed by an italian team headed by Fabrizio Capobianco, who’s been so wise to move marketing and sales to Silicon Valley, where he works since ‘99. I met with Fabrizio during my last trip to Palo Alto in October ‘08 and he told me the reasons behind the choice to leave R&D in Italy while keeping M&S in California instead. It looks like this choice has been the right one so far.
Moreover, Funambol just got a series B funding last June, securing $13.5 million.
Today Funambol is also an open source project targeted to consumers and enterprises as well as operators and service providers which want to offer a turnkey solution for managing messaging and PIM to their users.
Everyone can easily try it out by downloading the Funambol software for their mobile phone. Check it out and share your thoughts in the comment section.
