I'm thinking 'Netphone' as a general term might work, but on its own doesn't evoke the savings one might see with VoIP over POTS (and I think that 'cheaper' is the only advantage that can be sold in a sound bite). Cheaper-than-your-current-phone doesn't quite have the same ring to it. Yeah, just about any tech industry acronym can and will make a non-techie's eyes glaze over.
