Hi Luca,

I agree very much on the points made. The French market perfectly illustrates your theory. All ISPs offer at least a triple play service: Internet + Telephone + TV. They don't mention voip, they just say: for 29.99 euros per month you get: up to 100Meg internet (in big cities, with ftth), over 50 TV channels and unlimited calls to over 90 countries. voip calls now represent 48% of calls made from fixed lines in France and it's growing at a 16% annual rate.

The point is that the consumer doesn't even know that it's voip. The box he gets from his ISP has several plugs: TV, computer, telephone and he just needs to plug his telephone in the correct hole.

This consumer strategy has been initiated by a company called "Free" and all other French ISPs had to follow. There is no space in France for a pure voip operator. Now Free is applying for the 4th 3G license in order to repeat his strategy in the mobile telephony.

The power is definitely in the hands of the ISPs.

Yeah, just about any tech industry acronym can and will make a non-techie's eyes glaze over. I'm thinking 'Netphone' as a general term might work, but on its own doesn't evoke the savings one might see with VoIP over POTS (and I think that 'cheaper' is the only advantage that can be sold in a sound bite).

Cheaper-than-your-current-phone doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

The point is that people don't really care of what technology is behind their telephone, it works (it should work, at least...). BTW, I know Viatalk :-)

We have VoIP through Time Warner Cable's All-in-One package. I have no complaints, except for when the power goes out! If these phone companies ditch their VoIP service, my husband will probably find himself much busier... He works for ViaTalk, a VoIP company that few people have heard of. :-)
