Six Simple Steps To Escape From Social Media

Social Media addict? Twitter dependency? Has Facebook drugs-like effects on you? Ok, you are in the right place. Take note of six simple tips to get one (or more) day off and keep your mind away from pokes, tweets and wall messages.

6) I saw you. You were putting that blackberry in the bag to go to the park, right?. Your iPhone was already there, too! Forget them. Take an old mobile phone (if you need one) and make sure you can only make and receive phone calls with that. No internet. No data. Then put your sim card on it.

5) Get your kids ready and don’t forget to take the bikes with you. This is an important point!

4) Make sure you are not going to meet colleagues while at the park. The best would be taking a day off instead of doing this during a vacation. The downside is that you are more likely to receive phone calls. Ok, take the phone (that above) with you but keep it off. Turn it on only, I repeat, only if you are going to be eaten by a grizzly (to say “hi” to your mom/uncle/friends for the last time, at least).

3) As soon as you get to the park, start relaxing. Ride your bike together with your family, play football with the kids or simply rest. There are only you, your wife/husband, your kids, grass, trees and the sun. Please remember that if you need to talk to someone, don’t need to say “at” before the name.

2) If you meet an old friend and start talking, don’t forget that there is no way to know what he is doing/thinking without asking. No status message in the real life.

1) Play with your kids. If you are so lucky (like me) that they are young enough, they are likely still “pure” without any risk to be involved in social media stuff yet (better, never turned a PC on). Enjoy your time with them and learn how to be happy from little things, they have a lot to teach you in this space.

Did you do you homework? Are you sure your blackberry was not with you? Ok, I will forgive you for this, since mine was with me today :-)

Enjoy life and be happy, that’s what everyone around you needs, and your family comes first.

Great post Mark, happy to see I'm not the only one who think everyone should slow down a little bit. Thanks for stopping by. Luca

Luc,

Now, that's good advice. Hopefully, it will resonate with people. By the way, I wrote something related: http://www.markevanstech.com/2009/05/03/the-peril...

cheers, Mark
