Opera just launched a service that is definitely going to revolutionize the way we use the web. It’s called Opera Unite and it is basically a web server integrated into your browser. Being a web-server, it becomes directly accessible from other computers (from ANY browser) and there are many different services that you can make available to other users in order to share content from your computer.
The first services launched by Opera are:
- The fridge: a nice app that let people leave post-its for you directly on your browser
- Web Server: you can host a website straight on your PC
- Photo Sharing: just choose a folder on your PC containing photos, set the appropriate permissions and share them
- File Sharing: your computer becomes a rpository of files, very useful in multiple occasions
- Media Player: share music on your computer easily!
- Lounge: a public chat room
Every service can be managed straight from your browser that must be open in order for the service to work. People can reach your computer only if you share the links to access the services. In my case, here is the link to access to my fridge (leave as many post-its as you want):

Developers can create new services and I bet very interesting stuff is going to be available soon. It is a shame Opera has a so little market share since it’s clear to everyone they keep being innovators in this area. The only downside I see is that most people are now sharing content in new and more effective ways on the cloud (i.e. Facebook, Flickr, etc.) with much easier ways to find friends and share the content with people you really want.
