How To Install Android On Your Nokia N800

Today a friend of mine sent me a note saying that he just installed Android on a Nokia N800. I got that Nokia N800 from the Nokia Blogger Relation program and lent him in order to make some geeky things on it, since I was basically not using it at all.

Android is definitely a much better choice than Maemo, an OS I never liked so much since it is very slow and not that usable. The package, named NITdroid, can be found here with the detailed instructions to install it on your N8x0 Nokia tablet.

NITDroid is an open source project aimed to port Android to every Nokia tabled device. Currenlty N770, N800, N810 and N810WE are supported. Here is a list of supported and unsupported features:

The good:
Latest Linux 2.6 stable kernel.
Touchscreen.
Hardware watchdogs.
Hardware keyboard on N810.
Battery charging.
WiFi for N8x0 (using the open/free stlc45xx driver).
Android Debug Bridge (ADB) and (at the same time) storage USB gadget.
Keyboard fixed, now even Fn keys works.
No longer crashes.
LCD and keyboard brightness working.
Battery metering.

The bad:
Sound not working.
Bluetooth not working.
No GPS exploration yet.
No DSP exploration yet.

I haven’t had the chance to try it out but my friend told me it’s very well done and confirms it’s much better than Maemo, despite there are still some minor issues to be ironed out. What do you think? Will you ever think to install Android on your Nokia tablet? Please leave your comments.
